AI apps: choose where the model runs

An app gives you a finished interface for one kind of work, such as chat, transcription, documents, images or video. Before you choose, find out where the AI model runs. That decides the hardware you need, how you pay and where your data goes.

Check where it runs

Some apps run models on your own computer, such as Ollama, LM Studio and Jan. Some are an interface you install on a computer or server and open in a browser, such as Open WebUI. Hosted apps such as Claude Desktop send your work to the company's service. Many apps combine two of these. Local models need memory and disk space, and a self-hosted install often needs Docker, so read the requirements on each Library page.

Find out how the model is paid for

A free app can still call a paid service. Many apps ask for your own API key from a model provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic, and the provider charges per use. Others work through a coding agent or plan you already have, such as Claude Code or Codex. Local models have no per-use charge, but they need a capable computer. The Library's cost filter shows whether an app is free, usage-based or paid.

Know what leaves your computer

With a local model, your prompts can stay on your machine. LM Studio's documentation, for example, says chats and added documents stay on the device, while searching for and downloading models goes online. When you add a cloud provider key, the text you send goes to that provider. Apps that record your screen, microphone or meetings ask for system permissions, so check what they capture and where they keep it before you start one.
