Perplexity is an AI company based in San Francisco that makes the Perplexity answer engine and the Comet browser.
Perplexity is an AI answer engine. You ask a question in plain language; it searches the web, summarises what it finds and links each part of the answer to its source. Follow-up questions stay in the same session, and Research mode reads many sources to write a full report you can export as a PDF or document. It runs in the browser, in desktop apps for Mac and Windows and on phones, and suits students, writers and anyone who wants answers they can trace back.
Every answer shows its citations, so you can open the sources and judge them yourself instead of taking the reply on trust.
Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.
