Translates web pages and video subtitles side by side and saves new words as flashcards

View on GitHub

The problem it solves

You open an article in the language you're learning, hit three unknown words in the first line, and give up.

For Language learnersPeople reading in a second languageStudents

Before
You paste sentences into a translator tab, lose your place, and forget the new words by tomorrow.
After
Translations appear beside the original on the page and in subtitles, and the words you save come back as flashcards when they are due.

Overview

Read Frog is an open-source browser extension for learning languages while you read. It shows translations next to the original text on web pages and in YouTube, X and Netflix subtitles, explains or reads aloud the text you select, and saves words to flashcards for spaced review. You can use free Google or Microsoft translation, or connect one of more than 20 AI providers. It suits language learners and anyone who reads in a second language.

It is an open-source alternative to Immersive Translate that adds flashcard review, so the words you meet while reading become study material.

Try these first

Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.

  1. Open a short news article in [language you are learning], turn on bilingual mode and compare three paragraphs with the original.First try

  2. Select a sentence you don't understand and choose Explain to get it at your level.

  3. Turn on subtitle translation for a YouTube video in [language] and watch with both lines.

  4. Save five new words while reading, then review them as flashcards the next day.needs an account

Good to know

You read articles or watch videos in a language you are learning. Read Frog shows the translation beside each paragraph or subtitle line and lets you save unfamiliar words as flashcards for later review.

Limits

  • Free translation uses Google, Microsoft or DeepLX; AI translation, explanations and context-aware translation need your own provider key or a paid Read Frog plan.
  • The free plan limits saved notes and flashcard review; the pricing page lists the current limits.
