Overview

Skill Recorder is Microsoft's open-source desktop app that captures a work session on your screen: clicks, app switches, pages visited and, if you like, your spoken narration. When you choose Analyze, GitHub Copilot rebuilds what you did as one goal and a list of steps you can edit. From there it creates a reusable skill file or a scheduled automation. It suits people who repeat the same computer task and want an agent to take it over.

You show the task instead of describing it, and it generalises from one example, so recording one form submission can teach an agent to do the rest.

Good to know

You repeat a computer task, such as filling in the same web form, and want an agent to take it over. Record it once, edit the steps Copilot rebuilds, then create a skill or a scheduled automation.

Limits

Recording stays on your computer, but choosing Analyze sends window titles, URLs, clipboard previews, screen images and narration text to GitHub's cloud. Keep passwords and other secrets out of recordings.
It is a source release: the one-line installer downloads a pinned Node.js runtime and builds the app on your computer, which can take several minutes. Windows 11 and Ubuntu are supported; macOS is the main target.

Give it a first taskRecord a short task with no personal data, such as looking up one public web page and copying its title into a note. Analyze it and check that the listed steps match what you did.

Steps follow the creator's instructions. The request tells your agent to read them first and wait for your OK.
