Translates a whole PDF paper into another language, keeping formulas, charts and layout

View on GitHub

The problem it solves

You need a paper written in another language, and copying it into a translator turns every equation into gibberish.

For StudentsResearchersAnyone reading foreign-language PDFs

Before
You paste paragraphs into a translator one by one and lose the formulas, figures and page layout.
After
You get a translated PDF and a bilingual side-by-side copy, with formulas, charts and layout where they were.

Overview

PDFMathTranslate (pdf2zh) translates scientific PDFs page by page while keeping formulas, charts, tables of contents and annotations in place. You give it a PDF and get back a translated copy plus a bilingual side-by-side version. You can use the free online service, a Windows app, a local browser interface, the command line or Docker, and pick a translation service such as Google, DeepL or an AI model. It suits students and researchers who read papers in a language they don't read well.

Most translators break equations and layout; this one keeps the paper looking like the original and gives you both languages side by side.

Try these first

Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.

  1. Translate a short public paper of two or three pages, then compare the formulas in the bilingual file with the original.First try · sends text out

  2. Translate only page 1 of [paper.pdf] from English into [language].

  3. Translate [paper.pdf] with DeepL instead of Google.needs a DeepL key

  4. Open the browser interface with pdf2zh -i and translate [paper.pdf] there.

Good to know

You need to read a paper written in another language without losing its equations and figures. PDFMathTranslate produces a translated PDF and a bilingual version with the original layout.

Limits

  • The text of your PDF is sent to the translation service you choose, Google by default. Use a local model service if the paper must not leave your computer.
  • The first local run downloads a layout model. The README gives a mirror setting for regions where that download fails.
