Overview

DocsGPT is an open source app that builds AI assistants from your own documents. You add PDFs, Office files, web pages or connected apps such as Google Drive and Confluence, then ask questions and get answers that cite the documents they came from. You can also build agents and visual workflows and put an assistant on a website as a chat widget. It suits teams and individuals who want answers from their own material, on DocsGPT Cloud or on their own computer or server.

Answers cite the documents they came from, and the whole app, team features included, is MIT licensed and can run on your own machine.

Try these first

Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.

  1. Upload [a short PDF] and ask: where does it say [a fact you know]? Show the source.First try · read-only

  2. Create an agent called [Support helper] that answers only from the [Product handbook] knowledge.

  3. Connect [a Google Drive folder] and sync it into Knowledge once a day.connects an account

  4. Add the chat widget to [your site's support page] so visitors can ask questions.public on your site

Good to know

You have a handbook, a folder of PDFs or a docs site and want people to ask questions about it. DocsGPT ingests the material, answers with citations and can publish the assistant as a web chat, website widget, API or MCP server.

Limits

  • Self-hosting keeps the app and your files in your own environment, but a cloud model provider sits outside it and receives what the app sends it. Choose local models to keep everything in-house.
  • The project asks you to read its security checklist before making a self-hosted install reachable beyond your own machine.
