The problem it solves

You run a small business site and have no idea which searches bring customers, but the big SEO tools cost more than your hosting.

Overview

OpenSEO is an open-source SEO tool you use in the browser. You enter your site or a topic and get keyword ideas with search volume, rank tracking, competitor pages, backlinks, site audits and checks on how AI chatbots mention your brand. It also has an MCP server and skills, so an agent such as Claude Code or ChatGPT can work with the same data. It suits small businesses, marketers and site owners who find the big SEO suites too costly.

You pay for the data you use instead of a large suite, and you can self-host it or let your AI agent query it directly.

Good to know

Find which search terms people use for your service and see where your site ranks for them. OpenSEO shows keyword volume, competitors and backlinks, and can check whether AI chatbots mention your brand.

Limits

  • The hosted version needs a subscription after a small free trial; self-hosting avoids that but needs Docker and a DataForSEO API key you pay for per use.
  • New lookups use credits, so start with one keyword or one domain and check the cost on the pricing page.
