Overview

Hermes Agent is Nous Research's open-source AI assistant that runs on your computer or a server. You chat with it in a desktop app, the terminal or apps such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp and Signal, and it carries out tasks with its tools, runs scheduled jobs and sends you the results. It keeps notes about you and turns finished tasks into reusable skills. It suits people who want one assistant they can reach from anywhere, with the model of their choice.

It keeps a memory of you and writes its own skills from past tasks, and you can reach it from the chat apps you already use.

Good to know

You want an assistant you can message from your phone that remembers your preferences and runs recurring jobs, such as a morning summary. Hermes Agent runs on your computer or a small server, connects to chat apps and uses the model provider you choose.

Limits

It needs a model provider: your own API key, or a Nous Portal subscription that also covers web search, images and voice. Chat-app connections need their own bot setup.
It can run commands and act on connected apps. Start with read-only questions and decide which tools to enable with hermes tools.

Give it a first taskAfter choosing a model with hermes model, ask it to introduce itself and list the tools it has turned on. Check the list against the tools settings before giving it a real task.

Steps follow the creator's instructions. The request tells your agent to read them first and wait for your OK.

Before you start

A computer with macOS, Windows or Linux.
An API key or plan from a model provider (for example OpenRouter, OpenAI or Nous Portal)
The desktop app on Mac needs Apple Silicon; Intel Macs use the command-line install
