Overview

LLM for Zotero is a free add-on that puts an AI assistant inside the Zotero PDF reader. You ask about the open paper, a selected passage or a figure, and it answers with citations that jump back to the source; you can compare papers and save answers as Zotero notes or Markdown files. An optional Agent Mode (beta) searches and organizes your whole library, with confirmation cards and undo for its changes. It suits students and researchers who keep their reading in Zotero.

It works with many model options, including local models, ChatGPT in the browser, Codex and Claude Code, so you may not need a separate API key.

Try these first

Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.

  1. Summarize the method of this paper in three points, with citations.First try · read-only

  2. Explain the selected paragraph in plain words.

  3. Compare the open papers on sample size and main result in a table.

  4. Find the papers in my library about [topic] and tag them [tag].edits your library

Good to know

Limits

  • Paper text and your questions go to the model backend you choose; a local model keeps processing on your computer.
  • Agent Mode is in beta and off by default. Tag and metadata changes use confirmation cards, and recent write actions can be undone from the conversation.
