Overview

Kilo Code is an open-source coding agent from Kilo Code that works as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin and a command-line tool. You type what you want in plain English; it plans, edits files across your project and asks before running shell commands. You can pick from more than 500 models, switch between them mid-task, or use your own provider key or a local model. It suits developers and makers who build small apps and sites with AI.

You can switch models in the middle of a task and pay the provider's rate, with free models and your own keys as options.

Try these first

Start with the first one: it is a small task you can check easily.

  1. Create a file named hello.txt containing 'Hello, world'.First try · creates a file

  2. Explain how this project is organised. Don't change any files.

  3. Create an HTML file for a simple website with the title '[your title]'.edits files

  4. Plan how to add a contact form to this site, and wait for my go-ahead before writing code.

Good to know

You want an agent inside your editor or terminal that turns a plain-English request into file edits. Kilo Code proposes the changes, asks before running shell commands and lets you pick the model for each task.

Limits

  • By default most tools run without asking; only shell commands, folders outside the project and sensitive file reads ask first. Change this in the Auto-Approve settings before a larger task.
  • Paid models draw on Kilo Gateway credits or your own provider account. Free models may log prompts, so keep confidential data out of them. Check which model is selected before you start.
