Overview

Strata is a free app for running large open AI models, such as Qwen and DeepSeek, on your own computer. You install it, pick a model that fits your hardware, let it download and chat in the app window, with files and a live code preview beside the chat. It also serves a local address that coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex CLI and OpenCode can use as their model. It suits people with a recent graphics card or an Apple Silicon Mac and plenty of disk space.

It keeps chats and files on your PC, sends no usage data and needs no account.

Good to know

You want a chat model that runs on your own computer, with no account and no usage data sent out. Strata installs an app, downloads the model you pick and lets you chat, or lets a coding tool call the same model through a local address.

Limits

  • Models are large: Qwen packs need about 66 to 84 GB of disk and DeepSeek about 240 to 275 GB. On a Mac, the pack table in MAC.md lists about 46 GB of memory for Q2_0 and about 91 GB for UD-Q4_K_XL; the Q5 and Q6 packs stream from the SSD.
  • Intel Macs are not supported, and Intel Arc works on Linux only. On Windows and Linux the app downloads the engine for your card on first start.
