Overview
GitMCP is a free, hosted MCP server that turns a GitHub repository or GitHub Pages site into a documentation source for your AI assistant. You add a URL such as gitmcp.io/owner/repo to your client, or the generic gitmcp.io/docs; the assistant can then fetch and search that project's current docs and code when it answers. It suits people who use AI assistants with libraries and tools that change often or are too new for the model to know.
It needs no download or sign-up: you paste one URL, and the project says it does not store your queries.

Good to know
Ask your assistant how to use a library it may not know well. With the project's GitMCP URL connected, it reads the llms.txt file, the docs or the README from GitHub before it answers.
Limits
- The generic gitmcp.io/docs endpoint relies on the assistant picking the right repository each time; a repository-specific URL keeps it on one project.
- It reads public GitHub content only, in this order: llms.txt, an AI-optimised docs version, then the README.
