Overview

Octop is Tencent Cloud's open-source, self-hosted AI assistant for households and small teams. You install it on your own computer or server, connect a model, and chat with it in a web dashboard or through Feishu, DingTalk, QQ, WeChat, WeCom, Telegram or Discord. Each person can set up several specialist assistants from a built-in library that write reports, organise notes, run scheduled tasks and work in a browser. It suits families and small teams who want one shared assistant that keeps its data on their own machine.

One install serves several people, each with their own assistants, and it answers inside the chat apps your family or team already uses.

Good to know

You want one AI assistant that several people at home or at work can use from their usual chat apps. Octop runs on your own machine, gives each person their own assistants and can send scheduled messages.

Limits

Octop keeps its data on your machine, but each message goes to the model service you configure, and every chat-app channel needs its own bot credentials.
It can run shell commands, control a browser and share the host desktop. Review the tool approval and command rules in its settings before you connect a group chat.

Give it a first taskAfter installing, run the setup wizard, add one model and ask the default assistant to summarise a short article in the web dashboard. Check the summary before you connect any chat app.

Steps follow the creator's instructions. The request tells your agent to read them first and wait for your OK.

Before you start

A computer with macOS, Windows or Linux.
An API key for an OpenAI-compatible model service or DashScope (Qwen), or local Ollama
Bot credentials for each chat app you connect, such as a Feishu App ID and App Secret
A computer with a few GB of free memory to run it, plus disk space for your data
Pay per use. The AI service it calls charges for what you use.
