Overview

GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. It suggests code as you type, answers questions about a project and makes changes you describe, in editors such as VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs and Xcode, in the terminal with Copilot CLI, and on GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile. Paid plans add a cloud agent that works on a task in the background and opens a pull request for you to look over. It suits developers and people learning to code.

It is built into GitHub, so you can ask about a repository from the browser or your phone without installing anything.

Good to know

You want help understanding or changing code in a repository you work on. Copilot answers questions about the project and proposes changes in your editor, terminal or on GitHub, which you look over before keeping.

Limits

  • Copilot Free has a monthly cap on completions, automatic model choice only and limited agent use; the cloud agent that opens pull requests needs a paid plan.
  • GitHub's quickstart asks you to look at every Copilot request for permissions or actions, and at its changes, before you allow or merge them.
