What it does

GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's own connector for AI agents. Once connected, you can ask your agent in plain words to browse a repository, search code, open or update issues and pull requests, or find out why a GitHub Actions build failed. GitHub hosts it, so most agents only need a sign-in; a local Docker version is also available. It suits developers and teams who keep their work on GitHub.

It is made and hosted by GitHub itself, and you can limit it to read-only access or to just the toolsets you need.

Before you start

  • An AI agent that supports MCP, such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor.
  • A GitHub account
  • A GitHub personal access token, if your agent cannot sign in through the browser
  • Free option: Yes; it works on every GitHub plan, though tools for paid features need that plan
  • It connects to the internet. Your agent will show you what before installing.
  • Free. Nothing to pay.

How to start

  2. Sign up and choose a planCreate an account or sign in, then compare the official plans.
