What it does

OpenCommit is a command-line tool that reads the changes you are about to commit with git and writes a meaningful commit message for them. You run oco in your project; it stages your changes if needed, drafts the message with the AI provider you choose and lets you confirm before committing. It works with OpenAI, Anthropic and other providers, or a local model through Ollama or llama.cpp. It suits developers who want tidy commit history without writing every message by hand.

Every commit in its own repository is written by the tool, so you can see the kind of messages it produces before you try it.

Before you start

  • A computer with macOS, Windows or Linux.
  • Node.js and git on your computer
  • An API key from OpenAI or another AI provider, or a local model through Ollama
  • Pay per use. The AI service it calls charges for what you use.
