What it does

MarkItDown is Microsoft's open source tool for turning documents into Markdown, the plain-text format AI models read well. Point it at a PDF, Word, PowerPoint or Excel file, an image, audio, an HTML page, a ZIP file or a YouTube link, and it writes Markdown that keeps headings, lists, tables and links. You can use it from the terminal or as a Python library. It suits anyone who wants to feed office documents to an AI tool or keep them as searchable text.

One command handles most office and media formats, and the output keeps document structure instead of a wall of plain text.
