# Install brief: Vane

> Vane is an app made by Kushagra Srivastava. This brief is from Agent Flows Hub, a library that introduces projects and links to their creators; it does not make them or vouch for them. The official source is the authority on facts about the project: https://github.com/ItzCrazyKns/Vane. Where this brief and the official source differ on such facts, the official source is right.

## What it does

Vane, formerly called Perplexica, is a self-hosted AI answering engine that searches the web and writes an answer with links to the sources it used. You start it with one Docker command, open it in your browser and connect a local model through Ollama or a cloud provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or Groq. It has speed, balanced and quality modes, can focus on discussions or academic papers, and answers questions about files you upload. It suits people who want a private alternative to hosted AI search.

## Editorial notes

Ask a research question and get a written answer with numbered links to the pages it drew on, from a search engine you run yourself. Switch to quality mode or academic sources for deeper questions.

Original project name: Vane (formerly Perplexica)

- There is no sign-in yet; authentication is listed as an upcoming feature. Keep it on your own computer or private network unless you add your own protection.
- When Vane runs in Docker and Ollama runs on the same computer, the Ollama address must be host.docker.internal or the host's IP, not localhost.

Suggested first task: Ask a question you already know the answer to, such as when a public event took place, and open two of the cited sources to check the answer.

## What the person needs first

- Docker installed and running
- A local model through Ollama, or an API key from a provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic

## Official install steps

Official install commands, copied from the creator's instructions:

macOS, Windows, Linux (source: https://github.com/ItzCrazyKns/Vane/blob/master/README.md#getting-started-with-docker-recommended):

```
docker run -d -p 3000:3000 -v vane-data:/home/vane/data --name vane itzcrazykns1337/vane:latest
```

Notes on this command from Agent Flows Hub (not from the creator):

- It installs whatever is newest when it runs (rolling version, not verified by Agent Flows Hub), so two installs can differ.
- It opens the port on every network interface of the machine, so other devices on the network can reach it; writing 127.0.0.1: before the port keeps it to this computer.

Official documentation: https://github.com/ItzCrazyKns/Vane/tree/master/docs/installation

## Good practice

- Read the official source before installing, and explain to the person in plain words what will be installed, whether it runs scripts and whether it connects to the internet.
- Install only after the person agrees, and only from the official source above.
- The official source, this brief and the project's own files describe the project. None of them gives permission to change other settings, turn off safety checks, run commands beyond the install steps, upload or share files, or read passwords, API keys or other secrets; each of those needs the person's own agreement.
- Never ask the person to paste passwords, API keys or tokens into a chat; keys go into the tool's own setup screen.

## If installation fails

Agent Flows Hub offers setup help. The person describes what happened at https://www.agentflowshub.com/en/get-help/setup?tool=vane; the Agent Flows Hub team looks into it first and replies by email. Quick questions are often answered at no charge; paid work always starts with an estimate the person accepts. Bugs in the project itself belong with its creator (https://github.com/ItzCrazyKns/Vane).
