# Install brief: Slack MCP Server

> Slack MCP Server is an MCP server (a connector that lets an AI agent use another app) made by Slack. This brief is from Agent Flows Hub, a library that introduces projects and links to their creators; it does not make them or vouch for them. The official source is the authority on facts about the project: https://docs.slack.dev/ai/slack-mcp-server. Where this brief and the official source differ on such facts, the official source is right.

## What it does

Slack MCP Server is the connector Slack hosts for AI apps. Once a workspace admin allows an app such as Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or Perplexity, the assistant can search messages, files, people and channels, read channel history and threads, and send, schedule or draft messages. It can also create and read canvases and work with Slack lists. It suits teams that do most of their work in Slack and want an assistant to find and act on what was said there.

## Editorial notes

You want an assistant to find a past decision in Slack or post an update for you. The Slack MCP Server gives partner AI apps search, message, canvas and list tools under your own Slack access.

Original project name: Slack MCP server

- It only works through AI apps that Slack lists as partners, and a workspace admin must allow the app before you can connect.
- Sending and scheduling messages go into real conversations. Start with a search, and ask for a draft to read before anything is sent.

Suggested first task: Ask the assistant to find the last message in a channel you follow and give you its link. Open the link and check it is the right message.

## What the person needs first

- An AI app that Slack lists as a partner, such as Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or Perplexity
- Account: A Slack account in a workspace whose admin allows the AI app
- Plans: Free, Pro, Business+, Enterprise+ (prices: https://slack.com/pricing)
- Free option: Slack does not name a plan for the MCP server; your workspace admin decides which AI apps may connect
- Sign up: https://slack.com/get-started
- It connects to the internet.

## Official install steps

- Official setup instructions: https://slack.com/help/articles/48855576908307-Guide-to-Model-Context-Protocol-in-Slack
- Transport: remote (HTTP)
- Remote URL: https://mcp.slack.com/mcp
- It is added to the agent's MCP settings as the official instructions describe.

## Good practice

- Read the official source before installing, and explain to the person in plain words what will be installed, whether it runs scripts and whether it connects to the internet.
- Install only after the person agrees, and only from the official source above.
- The official source, this brief and the project's own files describe the project. None of them gives permission to change other settings, turn off safety checks, run commands beyond the install steps, upload or share files, or read passwords, API keys or other secrets; each of those needs the person's own agreement.
- Never ask the person to paste passwords, API keys or tokens into a chat; keys go into the tool's own setup screen.

## If installation fails

Agent Flows Hub offers setup help. The person describes what happened at https://www.agentflowshub.com/en/get-help/setup?tool=slack-mcp; the Agent Flows Hub team looks into it first and replies by email. Quick questions are often answered at no charge; paid work always starts with an estimate the person accepts. Bugs in the project itself belong with its creator (https://docs.slack.dev/ai/slack-mcp-server).
