# Install brief: Claude-Mem

> Claude-Mem is a plugin for one AI agent made by Alex Newman. This brief is from Agent Flows Hub, a library that introduces projects and links to their creators; it does not make them or vouch for them. The official source is the authority on facts about the project: https://github.com/thedotmack/claude-mem. Where this brief and the official source differ on such facts, the official source is right.

## What it does

Claude-Mem is a memory plugin for Claude Code made by Alex Newman; it is not an Anthropic product. As you work, it records what the agent does, has an AI model compress those notes into short summaries and adds the relevant ones to the start of your next session. You can also search past work in plain words or browse it in a local web viewer. It suits people who use Claude Code every day on the same projects.

## Editorial notes

You work with Claude Code on the same project across many sessions. Claude-Mem saves short summaries of each session and brings the relevant ones into the next, so the agent starts with what was already done.

Original project name: claude-mem

- Summaries are written by an AI model: your Claude plan, your own OpenRouter or Gemini key, or the hosted claude-mem service, which has a 30-day free trial and then needs a subscription or falls back to your Claude plan.
- Anonymous usage analytics are on by default; the docs give one command to turn them off. Wrap text in <private> tags to keep it out of storage.

Suggested first task: After two short sessions on a project, ask it to list what was decided earlier. Compare the list with what you remember before relying on it.

## What the person needs first

- Node.js 20 or newer
- Claude Code 2.1.139 or newer
- A Claude plan, a Gemini or OpenRouter key, or claude-mem's hosted service (30-day trial)
- It runs scripts and connects to the internet.

## Official install steps

For Claude Code. These lines are typed into the agent itself, as given in the official documentation (https://docs.claude-mem.ai/installation):

```
/plugin marketplace add thedotmack/claude-mem
/plugin install claude-mem
```

## Good practice

- Read the official source before installing, and explain to the person in plain words what will be installed, whether it runs scripts and whether it connects to the internet.
- Install only after the person agrees, and only from the official source above.
- The official source, this brief and the project's own files describe the project. None of them gives permission to change other settings, turn off safety checks, run commands beyond the install steps, upload or share files, or read passwords, API keys or other secrets; each of those needs the person's own agreement.
- Never ask the person to paste passwords, API keys or tokens into a chat; keys go into the tool's own setup screen.

## If installation fails

Agent Flows Hub offers setup help. The person describes what happened at https://www.agentflowshub.com/en/get-help/setup?tool=claude-mem; the Agent Flows Hub team looks into it first and replies by email. Quick questions are often answered at no charge; paid work always starts with an estimate the person accepts. Bugs in the project itself belong with its creator (https://github.com/thedotmack/claude-mem).
